In order for your child to have a strong and healthy smile, you need to help them care for their teeth and gums each day. Now, this might sound discouraging and maybe even a little overwhelming, but it’s easier than you might think. To help you, our dental team has some helpful tips for you.
Tip No. 1: Bring your child into Healthy Smiles Dental Care® of Manchester for their first checkup with Dr. Steven Rodriguez. It’s best to bring them in six months after their first tooth erupts or around their first birthday. At this visit, your child will be able to get to know our dental team and will familiarize him or herself with our dental office. This can help them feel comfortable at our office in the future. Our dental team will also examine your child’s smile and make sure everything is on the right track toward success. At this visit, you will be able to ask us any questions you have and learn all you need to know about how to care for your child’s smile.
Tip No. 2: Clean your child’s teeth and gums on a daily basis. If they don’t have chompers yet, you can wash the gums with a wet washcloth after each time they eat. If they do have chompers, brush those little teeth with a baby or child toothbrush and water. There is no need to introduce toothpaste until they are about 2-3 years old.
Tip No. 3: Keep your child’s smile free from decay. That’s right—babies can have cavities too; it’s called baby bottle tooth decay. This occurs when you send your child to bed with a bottle that is filled with a sugary liquid. So, please avoid doing so. If you need to give them juice, chocolate milk, or another sugary liquid, you can give it to them while they eat a meal. When giving them a bottle, make sure it only has milk or formula.
